A house fire is obviously a very dangerous – sometimes deadly – occurrence. Unfortunately, they are often caused by everyday things that can be easily avoided.
The main causes
- Cooking Oils and Grease – Oil and grease fires are common causes of kitchen fires. Don’t risk one by leaving your cooking unattended. Remain in the kitchen while cooking and keep combustibles away from heat source.
- Furnaces, Chimneys and Space Heaters – Have your furnace and chimney inspected regularly and keep space heaters away from curtains, clothing and anything flammable.
- Careless Smoking – keep bedroom off limits for smoking and use deep ashtrays.
- Electrical Equipment – make sure equipment does not have frayed cords and is away from fabrics, don’t overload plugs and be careful about do-it-yourself electrical projects.
- Candles and other open flames – keep candles in a sturdy holder and away from fabrics, children and pets.
What should you do?
Keep baking soda and fire extinguishers in key ares of your home. Place fire and carbon monoxide detectors in high risk areas throughout your home. Check batteries in fire and carbon monoxide detectors a couple of times a year.
