We were talking to a friend of ours the other day about all the sinkholes we’ve been reading about lately. Now he’s a hiking enthusiast and loves to go for long rambles through the Arizona desert. Every couple of miles, he tells us, he’ll run across a sinkhole – a big, well-defined circle in the desert where everything has simply dropped 10 or so feet.
We’ve been seeing an increase in the number of sinkholes in Minnesota, too, at least a few of which have formed here in the Twin Cities.
According to this article ‘ “Dozens, and probably hundreds, of new sinkholes that form every year,” said Calvin Alexander, a professor of earth sciences at the University of Minnesota, and an expert on sinkholes in the state. ‘
In addition to being something unusual and a bit disconcerting from a general perspective, from an insurance perspective, they can cause big problems for homeowners: they’re not part of standard homeowners’ coverage.
Sink holes fall under the same category as earthquakes because they’re a phenomenon related to earth shift.
